A senior Pakistani religious cleric and politician Maulana Fazal-ur-Rehman has endorsed the Taliban extremism in Afghanistan, calling the Taliban-led insurgency a legitimate war against the foreign forces.
The remarks by Fazal-ur-Rehman were followed after a meeting with President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani who arrived in Pakistan on Friday on a two-day state visit.
The visit by President Ghani is considered as a two-day fence-mending mission as the relations between the two plummeted to new lows over the past couple of years due to reignited border disputes, counter-terrorism differences and exchange of allegations.
President Ghani is expected to hold talks on a number of key issues, including regional security and Afghan peace talks with the anti-government armed militant groups.
Fazal-ure-Rehman is the chief of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam party who was among the main supporters of the Taliban group in Afghanistan.
Speaking during a gathering late in December in 2013, Rehman admitted that he upported the ‘Taliban struggle’ in Afghanistan but opposed to pick up arms in Pakistan.
